Oriental magpie-robin

This bird is a member of the thrush family and is not related to the much bigger Magpie ( which is closely related to crows and ravens).

Magpie-robins are prized for their very melodious song and they even learn new songs and readily shows off their vocal talent especially in the morning.

The small park between block 27 and block 58 is a favourite stage for a family of magpie-robin. The parents can be seen bring their chicks around the bushes.

This bird is a victim of its own sweet song and can often be seen being sold in pet shops. Today they are protected in Singapore. However in other Asian countries they continue to be trapped for their song as well as the illegal gambling trade ( bird fighting) which exploits the male bird's territorial instincts.
